Organ System Aging

Organ System Aging

Organ system aging refers to cumulative decline in structure and function of entire physiological systems over time. Aging affects cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, nervous, immune, endocrine, and metabolic systems. Reduced reserve capacity and impaired adaptability characterize aging organ systems. Decline in one system often influences others, amplifying functional deterioration. Organ system aging results from integrated effects of cellular damage, stem cell decline, and impaired intercellular communication. Understanding organ system aging supports holistic approaches to aging intervention that target system integration rather than isolated organs.
