Mitochondrial DNA Mutations Aging

Mitochondrial DNA Mutations Aging

Mitochondrial DNA mutations aging refers to accumulation of mutations within mitochondrial genomes over time. Mitochondrial DNA is particularly vulnerable to damage due to proximity to reactive oxygen species and limited repair mechanisms. As mutations accumulate, mitochondrial function becomes progressively impaired, reducing energy production efficiency. These defects disrupt cellular metabolism and increase oxidative stress, creating a feedback loop that accelerates aging. Mitochondrial DNA mutations aging affects high-energy tissues such as muscle, brain, and heart. This process contributes to bioenergetic decline, tissue dysfunction, and increased disease susceptibility. Understanding mitochondrial DNA mutation accumulation provides insight into how genetic instability within organelles drives systemic aging.
