Hypothalamic Aging

Hypothalamic Aging

Hypothalamic aging refers to age-associated functional and structural changes in the hypothalamus, a central brain region that regulates metabolism, reproduction, stress response, circadian rhythms, and energy balance. With aging, hypothalamic neurons exhibit increased inflammation, altered neuroendocrine signaling, and reduced responsiveness to hormonal feedback. These changes disrupt systemic homeostasis and contribute to metabolic imbalance, hormonal dysregulation, and reduced stress resilience. Hypothalamic aging also affects appetite regulation, body temperature control, and sleep–wake cycles. Chronic activation of inflammatory pathways within the hypothalamus accelerates organismal aging by influencing endocrine and immune systems. Research suggests hypothalamic dysfunction may act as a driver rather than a consequence of systemic aging. Understanding hypothalamic aging provides insight into how central regulatory hubs influence whole-body aging and highlights potential targets for interventions aimed at restoring metabolic and hormonal balance.
