Endothelial senescence describes permanent growth arrest and functional decline of endothelial cells lining blood vessels. Senescent endothelial cells exhibit reduced nitric oxide production, increased inflammation, and impaired barrier function. Accumulation of senescent endothelial cells disrupts vascular tone and promotes thrombosis and inflammation. Endothelial senescence contributes to vascular stiffness, impaired perfusion, and cardiovascular aging. Reduced regenerative capacity further limits vascular repair. Understanding endothelial senescence highlights cellular aging within the vasculature as a driver of systemic aging and disease susceptibility.
