Collagen Crosslinking Aging

Collagen Crosslinking Aging

Collagen crosslinking aging describes increased formation of non-enzymatic crosslinks between collagen fibers over time. These crosslinks reduce collagen flexibility and increase tissue stiffness. Aging collagen becomes less responsive to mechanical stress and more resistant to degradation and renewal. Collagen crosslinking aging affects skin, blood vessels, bone, and connective tissues, impairing elasticity and mechanical function. Accumulated crosslinks disrupt normal tissue remodeling and contribute to fibrosis and reduced adaptability. This process is accelerated by metabolic stress and oxidative damage. Understanding collagen crosslinking aging provides insight into how structural protein modification drives tissue stiffening and functional decline during aging.
