Cellular Quality Control Aging

Cellular Quality Control Aging

Cellular quality control aging describes progressive impairment of systems responsible for maintaining cellular integrity. These systems include protein folding surveillance, degradation pathways, organelle turnover, and damage detection mechanisms. With aging, efficiency of quality control networks declines, allowing damaged proteins, organelles, and macromolecules to accumulate. This accumulation disrupts cellular signaling, metabolism, and stress responses. Cellular quality control aging promotes senescence, inflammation, and tissue dysfunction. Failure of quality control systems affects nearly all cell types and is a central contributor to biological aging. Understanding cellular quality control aging provides a framework for targeting fundamental maintenance mechanisms to preserve cellular health and resilience across the lifespan.
