Brain Immune Aging

Brain Immune Aging

Brain immune aging describes age-related changes in immune regulation within the central nervous system. The brain relies on specialized immune cells and tightly regulated signaling to maintain neural function. With aging, immune surveillance becomes dysregulated, leading to excessive inflammatory activation and reduced protective responses. Aging brain immune cells show impaired debris clearance, altered cytokine production, and diminished support for neuronal health. These changes disrupt neural homeostasis and increase susceptibility to neurodegeneration. Brain immune aging also reflects altered communication between peripheral immunity and the brain. Understanding brain immune aging provides insight into how immune dysfunction contributes to cognitive decline and neurological vulnerability during aging.
