Autophagy and Aging

Autophagy and Aging

Autophagy is a cellular recycling process that degrades damaged proteins, organelles, and cellular debris to maintain homeostasis. With aging, autophagic efficiency declines, leading to accumulation of dysfunctional components that impair cellular function. Reduced autophagy contributes to proteostasis loss, increased oxidative stress, and cellular senescence. Autophagy is regulated by nutrient-sensing pathways and is strongly influenced by lifestyle factors such as caloric intake and physical activity. Enhancing autophagy has been shown to extend lifespan and improve healthspan in multiple model organisms. Autophagy plays a protective role in aging by maintaining cellular quality control and metabolic balance.
