Arterial Stiffness

Arterial Stiffness

Arterial stiffness refers to age-related loss of elasticity in large arteries. As arteries stiffen, they become less able to buffer pressure changes during blood flow. This increases cardiac workload and elevates risk of cardiovascular disease. Arterial stiffness is driven by structural changes in the vessel wall, inflammation, and accumulation of molecular damage. It is a key marker of vascular aging and strongly predicts morbidity and mortality. Understanding arterial stiffness highlights vascular health as a central determinant of systemic aging and functional decline.
