Aging Metabolism

Aging Metabolism

Aging metabolism refers to progressive changes in how the body produces, stores, and utilizes energy over time. These changes include reduced metabolic flexibility, altered glucose handling, impaired lipid metabolism, and declining mitochondrial efficiency. As metabolic processes become less adaptable, tissues show reduced capacity to respond to nutritional or energetic stress. Aging metabolism contributes to increased fat accumulation, insulin resistance, systemic inflammation, and oxidative stress. Hormonal shifts and disrupted nutrient sensing further influence metabolic balance. These metabolic alterations affect multiple organ systems and increase vulnerability to disease. Understanding aging metabolism is essential for identifying interventions that preserve energy homeostasis, maintain physiological resilience, and support healthy aging across the lifespan.
