Aging Immune System

Aging Immune System

The aging immune system undergoes structural and functional remodeling that affects immune defense and regulation. With age, immune cell diversity declines, signaling pathways become dysregulated, and immune responses become slower and less effective. Reduced production of new immune cells limits adaptability to novel pathogens. At the same time, accumulation of dysfunctional immune cells promotes inflammation and tissue damage. The aging immune system shows reduced surveillance against infections and malignancies while increasing susceptibility to autoimmune reactions. These changes contribute to higher morbidity and mortality from infectious disease in older adults. Understanding aging immune system dynamics is essential for preserving immune competence, improving vaccination strategies, and promoting healthy aging.
