Aging and Diabetes

Aging and Diabetes

Aging and diabetes are strongly linked through progressive metabolic and cellular changes. Advancing age increases vulnerability to impaired glucose regulation due to reduced insulin sensitivity, altered pancreatic function, and increased inflammation. Aging tissues show diminished capacity to manage glucose efficiently, leading to chronic hyperglycemia. Diabetes further accelerates aging by promoting oxidative stress, vascular damage, and inflammation. This bidirectional relationship increases risk of cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and functional impairment. Aging and diabetes share underlying mechanisms related to metabolic imbalance and cellular stress. Addressing diabetes within an aging framework supports prevention strategies that preserve metabolic health and reduce age-related complications.
