Age Related Functional Decline

Age Related Functional Decline

Age related functional decline refers to gradual loss of ability to perform physical, cognitive, and daily activities independently. This decline results from cumulative deterioration across multiple systems, including musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, neural, and metabolic systems. Reduced strength, balance, endurance, and coordination increase vulnerability to falls and disability. Cognitive slowing and sensory impairment further affect daily functioning. Age related functional decline is not uniform and varies widely among individuals. Biological aging mechanisms such as inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and stem cell exhaustion contribute to declining function. Early detection of functional decline allows intervention before irreversible disability develops. Addressing age related functional decline is central to preserving independence and healthspan during aging.
