Title : Architecture of functional age maintenance: Reinterpreting Porfiry Ivanov's natural health model in the context of modern geroscience
Abstract:
Preserving functional capacity throughout aging is a central goal of modern geroscience. Attention is increasingly shifting from isolated interventions toward integrated health models in which outcomes arise from interactions among physiological, metabolic, behavioral, psychosocial, social, and environmental mechanisms. One of the least explored models of this kind is the natural health system developed by Porfiry Ivanov over more than five decades. During the late twentieth century, it attracted physicians, physiologists, educators, and public health professionals. Published reports and conference materials described favorable outcomes across diverse somatic, functional, and psychophysiological conditions in children and adults. These observations stimulated professional discussions, scientific conferences, educational programs, and proposals for institutional and state-level evaluation. Although many components—including cold exposure, periodic fasting, physical activity, breathing practices, contact with nature, prosocial behavior, and self-regulation—are now studied independently, the system itself has rarely been examined as an integrated adaptive framework. We propose that its principal feature lies not in the individual practices but in the architecture of their interaction, in which each component may reinforce the adaptive effects of the others and contribute to a unified multilevel regulatory system. We hypothesize that this architecture offers a conceptual framework for understanding how multimodal natural interventions may help preserve functional age, adaptive resilience, and healthy aging. The Ivanov system may therefore be reconsidered not merely as a historical or cultural phenomenon, but as a long-term natural health model capable of generating testable hypotheses for contemporary geroscience and interdisciplinary research.
